These island outlines are now being filled with clean navigation channel dredged material annually, which will total approximately 2.3 million cy over the next 20-30 years. The new project outline areas total approximately 200 acres of islands. The original islands protected many acres of aquatic and migratory bird habitat. The harbors and projects highlighted are:ġ) Port of Green Bay, Wisconsin: The Cat Island Project completed the construction of the armor stone outline of the three islands in 2013 which were previously destroyed by high water in the 1960’s. harbors and how two Great Lakes harbors with strong federal and state support are promoting alternative disposal options such as habitat creation/restoration to address the critical CDF capacity shortage through beneficial use of dredged material.

This presentation will highlight this critical CDF capacity issue that exists for many of the U.S. One such beneficial use can be for aquatic and sub-aquatic habitat creation or restoration. The need to seek and utilize alternative applicable uses for the dredged material is critical to extend existing CDF’s useful capacities.ĭecades of environmental cleanup efforts have increased the portion of dredged sediments which now are similar to lake background sediments making them suitable for beneficial use.

The majority of these CDFs are now nearing capacity. Approximately ½ of this dredged material is placed in Confined Disposal Facilities (CDFs) which were built in the late 1970’s. Army Corps of Engineers annually dredge 3-5 million cy of sediments from 25-50 U.S.
